Environmental professionals’ capabilities and experience vary widely. Experience on a cleanup site can range from pulling samples to developing remediation strategies. Experience with the Clean Water Act can include anything from visual stormwater monitoring, to developing facility plans, to negotiating effluent limits. There is a difference between serving on an EMS cross-functional team and being responsible for driving environmental performance improvement across an organization. Simply searching resumes for keywords can result in candidates who may not meet the needs of the position, and may even exclude excellent candidates.

With the variety of professional licenses and environmental certificates available, determining the suitability of any such credentials a candidate holds, in terms of the realistic applicability to your needs, requires an understanding of the eligibility criteria of each program and the testing and knowledge each indicates.
