Description

 

The ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGER is responsible for providing direction and leadership to a team of 2-5 Environmental Compliance Specialists. They will develop, implement, and oversee environmental policies, programs, and trainings at seafood processing facilities in the United States.

The department’s programs are intended to ensure compliance with all state, federal, and local environmental laws and regulations, as well as corporate environmental policies. These programs include but are not limited to industrial wastewater discharges, storm water pollution prevention, drinking water safety, ocean dumping, air quality, oil handling, spill prevention, and handling or shipment of hazardous wastes and materials.

This position includes travel to facilities in North America including remote areas of Alaska.

Essential Functions, Duties & Responsibilities:

Program Management

  • Leads the implementation and maintenance of Environmental Management System, fosters a culture of environmental compliance and responsibility. Leads efforts to increase Environmental presence and importance across all parts of the organization.
  • Ensures management and employees are knowledgeable on what constitutes a culture of environmental compliance and how to utilize such knowledge and skills to access root causes of incidents and how to identify and implement appropriate corrective action.
  • Collaborate across the organization in the development, tracking, and communication of key performance indicators for evaluating environmental performance. Lead the preparation of ongoing management reports to measure and track performance trending.
  • Guides and assists environmental department personnel with critical environmental and regulatory problem evaluation and action planning.
  • Supervises team of Environmental Compliance Specialists.
  • Effectively plans and assigns tasks, manages time and resources to ensure work is completed efficiently.

.Compliance:

  • Ensures regulatory compliance by overseeing facilities’ required environmental permit administration, monitoring, reporting, and recordkeeping, and other compliance-related activities.
  • Responsible for tracking developments in federal, state, and other environmental regulations likely to affect the company.
  • Interprets laws and regulations impacting the business and offers suggestions to functional managers to ensure compliance.
  • Reviews and supports the preparation of environmental permit applications and regulatory reports that are required by the various regulatory programs.
  • Protects the Company’s assets, public health, and natural resources through responsible environmental practices.
  • Reviews and supports the conduct of periodic reviews or audits of environmental program data, trends, and processes. Communicates and facilitates the resolution of potential areas of non-compliance, necessary corrective actions, risks, and opportunities for continuous improvement collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leads and conducts final review of reports and communications to regulators. Represents company in negotiations with regulators.

Communication:

  • Leads successful cross-business partnerships by effectively communicating with internal stakeholders, including but not limited to Environmental, Safety, Risk Management, Human Resources, Operations, Engineering and all other departments and employees.
  • Establishes exceptional interpersonal relationships with team and others to foster a continuous improvement environment.
  • Collaboratively resolves individual and organizational conflict by using effective negotiation and mediation strategies.

Training:

  • Supports the development and implementation of risk management goals of training programs consistent with governmental regulations and stakeholder needs.

Risk Mitigation:

  • Mitigates risk exposure by identifying sources of risk and developing needed programs, policies, and procedures. Avoids legal challenges by understanding current and proposed legislation.
  • Supports operations dealing with government agencies on environmental matters affecting the company.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and manage environmental program audits to reduce risks and consequences of non-compliance.

Process Improvements:

  • Ensures internal and external stakeholder satisfaction by recommending best practices. Drives, implements, sustain, and develop quality process improvements that focus on operations and customer service.
  • Works with trade and professional organizations to promote goals and objectives in the environmental compliance area that affect company's business.
  • Provides solutions using effective approaches including simplification of complex issues and clearly understanding difference between critical detail and unimportant fact.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to lead priority setting within team assignments and foster teamwork.
  • Provides leadership, coaching, and mentoring of department team members or facility team members.
  • Ability to manage and resolve complex environmental issues.
  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of environmental regulations including but not limited to Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, RCRA, and SPCC.
  • Strong collaboration, analytical, influential, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Must be results-oriented with the ability to drive continuous improvement within the department as well as the overall organization.
  • Develop and execute actionable work plans that drive compliance outcomes.
  • Use of computers to communicate, collect, analyze and synthesize data, and for presentations, proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and other operations applications is required.
  • Ability to persuasively communicate with all levels of management and team members at various locations. Strong training, reporting, data analyzing and presentation skills.

Minimum Requirements

 

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BS, BA), preferably in a related field; additional years of relevant work experience may be substituted for educational experience AND minimum of 5 years of experience in the industrial environmental field with multi-site management/responsibility
  • Experience in the manufacturing sector
  • Experience in LEAN, Six Sigma, or similar manufacturing process improvement tools.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Current training certifications or ability to obtain certifications as necessary for specific job tasks within 6 months of hire date, including but not limited to HAZWOPER, DOT HazMat, Spill Response, Storm Water, etc.
